According to a national survey conducted for North­eastern Uni­ver­sity, although the majority of Americans think higher education is critical to success, 83% believe the country's current system must innovate in order for it to remain competitive in a global leadership position. Amer­i­cans said Higher Edu­ca­tion needs to focus on five key areas:

1. Global study/work opportunities
2. Entrepreneurship
3. Co-op, integrating professional work opportunities into higher education
4. Hybrid courses combining online an in-person teaching
5. No-frills, lower-cost education
